Teamwork

Teamwork is based on three main components: direction, diversity, and dedication. Groups cannot succeed without direction and communication.  Without diverse opinions, teams would fail to address difficult issues and challenges. The dedication to a cause is a key component to the success of every team.

Direction

Direction is the result of clear communication. My Bush School Capstone team is, quite honestly, one of the best teams I have had the privilege to work with. I have discovered that communicating openly and honestly about concerns, differing opinions, and suggestions is vital to our success in determining a direction for the project. Due to our communication, I have learned a great deal from my team about finding and creating direction in a project. Our project is unique, and it is often difficult to pinpoint a specific route. However, due to our efforts to communication and find direction together, we have been successful in our project.

Diversity

Diverse opinions and ideas, and an environment where those opinions and ideas are welcome, are vital to successfully achieving goals and problem solving within a group. During my time as Secretary in the Bush School Student Government Association (SGA), I worked with a team from diverse backgrounds. Fortunately, the team fostered an environment where we were all comfortable sharing our diverse views and opinions. Because of that, we were able to successfully achieve goals we had for the student body by equally listening and contributing respectfully to the team. One of the most satisfying outcomes of our different opinions was that we were able to problem solve quite effectively. Because everyone contributed their diverse opinion in an open and welcoming environment, problems were easily solved, and goals were not only reached, but surpassed.

Dedication

Group dedication to a cause is critical to successful teamwork. I have worked for the WomanStats Project (the largest database on the status of women from all over the world) as a Coder and Assistant Researcher for over three years during my undergraduate as well as my graduate work. The topics we research and deal with are difficult because they touch on things such as women's physical security (i.e. rape, abuse, etc. in a country), inequity in family law, honor killings, and femicide. What has impressed me about the WomanStats Coders I work with, is the dedication each person has to combating these issues. The societal view of feminism and women's studies is often negative. However, among the women and men I have associated with through the WomenStats Project, I have discovered a dedication and tenacity to promote change and stand up for what is right no matter the cost. Every team should have people as dedicated to truth and justice as the WomanStats Coders.
